Tips on being an ambassador

  • First Impressions…

First impressions are EVERYTHING. How you approach a business from the start says a lot about you as a person. Supporting the business before applying to be an ambassador shows that you are keen and committed and increases your chances of being selected as a brand ambassador.

  • Be a customer first…

Being a customer doesn’t only mean purchasing products all the time. From the perspective of a small business owner, sharing and promoting small businesses DEFINITELY does not go unnoticed and is definitely taken into account when we receive brand ambassador applications. Being a customer means owning/purchasing products from that business and supporting the business on social media. This could mean liking, sharing, commenting, and interacting with the business’s page.

  • Social Media Content…

Social media presence and content is important. Almost EVERY business takes time to review your social media content and presence when they consider you as a brand ambassador. If you wouldn’t want your friends or family to see it, don’t post it. Being active on social media is a huge part of being a brand ambassador for small businesses. This shows that you are frequently active and will be able to promote their business frequently. Keep in mind that no one is perfect but make sure you’re watching what you’re posting is a big thing as this could negatively impact your chances of being selected as a brand ambassador.

  • Spelling & Grammar…

Poor grammar, misspelling several words, and poor formatting could show businesses that you may not apply yourself or that you do not take pride in how you do things. This goes for applications, social media posting, etc. Be sure to spell-check and proofread your application before sending it in. Keep in mind how you communicate with people as well, no business wants a rude brand ambassador.

  • Know why you should be chosen…

Know why you should be chosen as a brand ambassador. If you know why you should be chosen and are confident in your reason, your application will definitely show it. List a few reason why you would be a great addition to the team. Don’t forget to add ways that you will promote the business if selected, and don’t forget to write about yourself! This will give us a very good idea of whether or not you will be a good fit for the team. Remember to have great character, positivity, a good following on social media, and a consistent, positive platform. TIP: Mention names of people you have referred to the business. This shows the business that you are already promoting them.

  • Be informed where you can…

If selected as a brand ambassador, you should know as much about the business as you can. This includes the location of the business, owner name, prices of products, website, etc. If you are familiar with some of the products, navigating the business’s website, and have a general overview of the business, your chances of being selected for positions will increase.

  • Creativity is key…

Be creative with how you plan to advertise the business you are promoting. Take initiative and ask for business cards to hand out, wear their branded clothing out and about, tag them in pictures wearing their products and use hashtags! Being a great ambassador for a small business will benefit you in the future when applying for bigger businesses. TIP: Be as original as possible! This will help you stand out from everyone else when applying.

  • Keep at it…

DO NOT GIVE UP after being knocked back once! Businesses recieve hundreds of applications and emails when opening up a brand ambassador position and it is an EXTREMELY hard descision to pick only a few of the very deserving applicants. If you are ever having trouble writing your application, reach out to a small business for guidance as to what to put in your application/what not to put in your application. Don’t be afraid to ask businesses for guidabnce on how to improve your application.

  • Keep invested in the business…

Keep invested in the business even if you are not seleced as a brand ambassador during the first round of applications. Keep following the business and what they’re up to, keep a mental note of any sales and deals they run so you can add on your next application that you continued following them after not being selected in the first round of applictions. Simple things like commenting an emoji, sharing and liking posts, all help towards engagement. Small business owners ALWAYS remember and keep in mind those who support them! Tip: Never be afraid to ask businesses for feedback on your application and how you can improve it for next time!
